Maria Gallagher opens up the podcast with Father Tad discussing the term “bioethics” and what it means, and considers the work and outreach of the National Catholic Bioethics Center. They also discuss physician-assisted suicide and the importance of dying well. Father Tad explains why assisted suicide is an action directed against the dignity of life, and runs directly counter to the tenets of good medicine. He also points out how an approach of radical autonomy, or "whatever I want should be given to me medically," constitutes a harmful misunderstanding when it comes to our duties and responsibilities towards ourselves. The importance of palliative care and pain management, as well as close consultation with medical professionals, are also discussed, especially in situations of terminal illnesses.
